The Scar by Tobi
“The Scar”
My weekly climb
up the mountain
to get the firewood.
It was such a long walk.
Once I was on the mountain
I saw a good tree.
The tree was very difficult
to climb.
Dad never let me climb
the trees.
My Auntie wasn’t watching me
So I started to climb the tree.
The tree was as prickly as a porcupine.
The wind was blowing….hoo hoo.
I’m so far up.
I grasped for the branch .
Oh no!! I’m falling.
Boom, bang, bonk.
Scratch, crash, thud. The smell of pine.
There I was, laying on the ground.
It pain was so intense.
The blood is black
And running down my body.
I’m screaming in pain .
Auntie is running over to me.
What’s wrong?
Take me home.
My own screams of terror ring in my ears.
I have to be quiet.
Auntie is yelling at me.
She says “shut up”
or they will take me away.
The long walk home
down the mountain.
A bamboo stick
to use as a cane.
More pain; I could barely take it.
I couldn’t bend.
The blood kept on coming.
When I was finally home
Auntie put some oozy stuff on my cuts.
It was such a strange weird feeling.
Then she wrapped me up to keep it clean.
I look down at my scar
and remember the smell of vegetables
the bees buzzing
And the sun shining.
My scar is a constant reminder of that day.

A New Country by Jessica
A New Country
The massive plane is landing.
I have arrived in Edmonton.
I am so happy.
In the airport,
I look at the strange people.
They have pointy noses,
Green eyes, blue eyes,
So many with blonde hair.
Leaving the airport.
It was as cold as ice.
Glad I brought a big jacket.
On my way to a new home,
There’s so much snow.
So many cars.
The cars are so huge.
Snow, snow, and more snow
We couldn’t see a thing.
It was so slippery.
Wow. That is gigantic. A semi trailer.
Into the ditch we go.
My first accident.
We get out of the car
and touch the snow.
It’s so cold.
Then it’s time for school.
I’m so petrified.
Those Canadians are staring at me.
They talk a mile a minute.
I don’t understand
Anything they are saying.
I can only smile.
Are they being nice to me?
No uniforms, different rooms,
Always going to other classrooms.
Students driving a car!!
So different from China.
What a country!
Smells amazing.
People are so nice.
I’m not scared anymore.
I love Canada!!

Skiing by Kayla
Skiing
So it’s pretty much a tradition
That in the summer I have to go skiing
But that one summer
When I didn’t want to ski
My dad made me
It took a while
But finally I was convinced
I went out mad
Into the smooth still water
He pulled me up behind the boat
So there I was in my little red life jacket
I was skiing and having fun
But of course I couldn’t let him know that
I had a vile look on my face like I was so mad
I hadn’t wanted to go skiing
But once I had it was fun
I had a blast
But it started out smooth
Then just kept getting rougher
The waves were big now
I was ready to quit
Oh No, I thought
Here comes a big wave
I flew in the air
I was like a flying bird
Then the skies hit me
They hit me pretty hard,
I lunged forward
Into the water I went
Now I was mad
He had forced me to go
And now id been injured
I didn’t try to get back up
I got into the boat
I’m done with skiing
I don’t want to again
I was done with it then
And he made me go again.
Time to Ride by Lindsey
Time to Ride
Lindsey
I am finally tall enough
as I stand there feeling like an ant
I look at the winding structure
and I realize I will experience it
My whole family has done it
It is the thrill of the ride
the thought of flying
for the very first time
A line of ecstatic people
wait eagerly for their turn
they stand laughing
as i stand unsure
The entrance nears
and my heart starts to race
I have a knot in my belly
but still, a smile on my face
I choose my seat
the bar secures me down
and for a split second I feel- claustrophobic
and my smile turns into a frown
It was to late to turn back now
I was on my way to the top
and then it hit me
as i began to drop
I can't explain how i felt
my body shifting with every twist and turn
It all felt fake as if nothing was real
People were screaming
my throat to tight to talk
we start slowing
but it all seems surreal
I am more than happy to jump off
and leave this amusement park
my ride on the coaster
was more then over
Getting Up
Getting Up
Getting up in the morning
Can be one of the hardest
Challenges of the day
Sporting your favorite pair
Of penguin pajamas.
Head still hiding
From the light of day,
Searching for that
Ever elusive snoose button.
Eventually you find yourself
Sitting up in bed.
Congradulations,
Your half way there
Your brain is beckoning to you
"Go back to bed!!"
Finally you're on your feet
Looking like a mosh monster
That crawled out of a ditch somewhere.
But first things first,
Where the heck is that alarm clock!?
Fight For His Life
Fight For His Life
Ever since he was twelve
He’s been fighting for his life
Surviving a deadly disease 3 times
Is not something a child should have to do
Nico is a part of my family
He’s at our house and we’re at his
We’re thankful everyday for him fighting it
Even when he was tired
It was extremely painful for him
Several surgeries, chemo, radiation
He now has to take oral chemo
For the rest of his life
His pure strength and love
Got him through this terrifying time
He had unconditional support from friends and family
Because he is loved by so many people
Nico never gave up
He always fought through
He knew it wasn’t his time to go
He knew he could beat it
Not many people have that much faith in themselves
People look at him funny now
So he doesn’t go out much anymore
I wish this never happened
He didn’t deserve it
One positive thing came out of this experience
Anything is possible to overcome in life
And Nico showed me that.
Dream Come True
Dream Come True
I look out the window
at the snow covered mountains.
And think to myself,
I get to ride on those
Lucky, fortunate, blessed.
But I don't want to because,
I'm scared.
I'm scared that i will fall.
Back out, quit.
Here I am, at the top of the mountain.
It looks arctic, frosty,
and intimidating.
I look to my left and see a guy carve
through the white snow, like a walk in the park.
If I can do it, I can do it.
Determination, bravery, heart.
I strap in my feet,
there's no turning back now.
I slowly lean forward and carve through the deep white powder.
It's the most amazing feeling in the whole world.
Exhilarating, sensational, overwhelming.
It was like I was a kid again by Keegan
It was like i was a kid again!
It was in Augest.
It was in Edmonton!
It was huge!
It made me think for awhile if i really wanted to go?
I never experianced anything like it befor!
It took my breath away!
I thought i was going to die!!!!!!
It was like a 60 to 80 foot drop!
It hurt the chest after!
My heart was going to blow up!!
It felt like i was falling into nothing!
It felt like i was going to die!
It went really fast and it was red!
I called it the Demond!
It nwas the water park in Edmonton.......
I will never forget it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lesson to be Learned
Lesson to be Learnt
The waters running off
from the vast mountains,
in beautiful British Columbia.
The absence of warmth
is substituted by cool crisp air.
The indescribable rush that comes
when you're about to fall.
The splash as your paddle hits the ice cold water,
is like listening to my favorite lullaby.
A drop that hits still water,
only a thousand times better.
Silence came when waiting
for the next big fright.
Being a lion,
thinking you can do anything at the time.
Striking with bravery,
yet worrying about what will come next.
Never anticipated it to feel like this,
like I'm on the edge of a cliff miles high.
Hating every minute of it,
up untill the surreal nightmare was over.
The feel of frost on my legs,
burnt like a hundred sparks
landing unexpectedly on you.
Irritation found a place inside me for days,
clinging to every bit of me.
The lesson is learnt,
stick with what you want to do.
Partners by Mercedes
“Partners”
As my partner and I start running,
trying to beat our last time,
the worst time of all, he decides he won’t listen.
I dig my heels into his sides, and rein him,
to try to keep in control.
He rears up, and I go soaring through the air.
While I’m flying, he takes off to the trees like
the wind.
My face goes bright red, I scream, “Wheels!!”
I take another horse to retrieve my partner back.
He looks at me and feels shame for what he did.
He knows I am a raging human of fury,
ready to explode,
So he stays in the brush.
I know my partner and he knows me, so…
Ever so gently, I coax him out and he knows
I will never hurt him even in all my frustration.
As I get back on my loyal steed, faithful partner,
and best friend, I hope he understands why I
was upset.
Just as we try the same routine and try to beat our last time,
Stubborn horse!... repeats the fiasco again!.
Into the Woods
Into the Woods
I will never forget that October.
The crisp air sent chills up my spine
as we entered the shadow of the timbers.
Everything became unpredicable from
the moment the quad silenced.
Dad and I made our way to the ground blind
and there was no turning back.
The gun was loaded yet my body was trembling.
Disturbing the feast of a sow and her cubs
was not something i wanted to encounter.
I didn't dare to blink until we
reached our destination.
15 yards down the embankment there stood
the bait barrel that showed clear
evidence of wild intruders.
Patiently we sat awaiting the arrival of a
predator.
The sounds of Mother Nature began to play games
with our minds.
Without warning the dark figure made his entrance.
Unobtrusively he approached the clearing in which
I had full veiw of his unique blonde coat.
We watched his toss the 500 pound barrel like
it was a weightless beach ball.
His claws were like human hands, only they
were grasping huge slabs of raw meat.
It was time to raise my barrel and I put
my crosshairs dead on.
Out came the fire from the end of my
30 06 bolt action rifle and like a sack
of potatoes he dropped.
Excitement brought tears to my eyes and the
everlasting silence broke with cheering and hollering.
Dad was so proud and it meant the world to me.
Extreme by Aileya
Extreme
By Aileya M
9 nights of cold, 10 days of heat
so much portages, rowing, so little sleep
waking up at 7am, finishing up at 8 pm
the sites were gorgeous, the work was foul
so many rapids to go through
with a very packed, narrow canoe
last day we spent a day at "City Rapids"
it was time to have some fun
so me and my friends decided
to jump off 40 meters above water into a rapid
stared down to the water that was moving so fast
scared to death, took a few steps back
took a deep breath, and ran to jump off
felt like falling off of a ferris wheel
I hit water, I could feel my life jacket
being nearly taken off me from the pressure
all I can think of was getting to surface
I stayed under water for at least minute
finnally I hit surface
I could see Sarah throwing me a beeine
so hard and fast, the water was pushing me
The current was pushing me away from the others
I was pulled in laying on the rock
I could hear my friends yelling and screaming running to me
all I said..
"That was extreme"
The Place I Call Home by Katie
The Place I Call Home
Once leaving town I only looked back.
Not looking forward to living somewhere else.
If I could go back there one more time,
I would be sure to say good-bye.
I arrived in this strange and foreign place.
It doesn’t feel the same even though I’ve
been here a million times before.
Now I know I won’t be going back,
after we haul are hefty cardboard boxes
into the big empty, gloomy house.
First day of school I remember very well.
Entering the classroom was like entering a cave
full of bears ready to rip you to shreds. All
I hope is that my last piece of dignity would be
spared by these judgmental people.
As time went past the only thing on my
mind was the place I called home.
The city where my heart longed to be,
the city where familiar faces turn to strangers.
Sometimes I wish I could go back and stay forever,
but I’m stuck in this empty town.
Now the town I dreaded coming to is my home,
if I were to leave I would miss it just as much as my home before.
Drop of Doom
Drop of Doom
I'm thinking to myself
I'm thinking to myself
each step could be my last.
The higher I go,
the more work it is to breath.
My lungs, bursting, painful, agonizing.
I finally reach the top.
I take one last deep breath
before I walk any closer.
"Next!" Shouted the attendant.
Walking up to her with sweaty palms
and jittery knees, I near the edge.
I nervously peak my head over
the railing, squinting just to see
the ant-shaped people looking
back at me with anticipation.
Slowly, I lower myself
into a sitting position.
I feel the cool water splash my legs
which makes my heart pound so
loud I swear everyone can hear.
I lean back and scoot forward a little
only to see the discolored roof above me.
One last push and I close my eyes.
I am a bullet,
heading straight towards the depths
that lie beneath me.
Like a strike of lightening
I hit the clear blue water.
Quickly I surface with two kicks
of my trembling legs.
I swim stunned towards
the exit of the pool.
I hop out of the water,
smiling as though nothing
had ever happened.
Sink or Swim by Quinn
Sink or Swim
Sitting on the raft's edge
gripping my oar like a child clings to its blanket
preparing for the inevitable
preparing for the inevitable
practicing the techniques
I will need in the future
All I can think about are the fears
the fear of falling out
the fear of taking the lead
the fear of every possible situation, even death
maybe mine or someone else
Don't want to back out now
deep, deep down inside
I want to do this
I know if I don't, I'll regret it
My mom is with me
giving me support and courage
we work as a team
keeping time, smiling occasionally
taking in the scenery
and a couple gulps of water
The rapids get rougher
the going gets tougher
testing our skill and ability
things get crunchy
we hit a wall of water
a buddy has no choice but
to meet the experience on the next level
he's over his head but stays calm in the moment
our guide reaches out drawing him to safety
Suddenly, all is still
at the foot of Mount Robson
in the frigid Fraser River
with the summer sun beating down
Now I float on my back
buoyed by my lifejacket
not by accident but by choice
letting the water take me
squinting as I stare at the clear blue sky
I exhale and give a giggle
all the struggles are behind me
only calm waters ahead
