This week's writing assignment refer to the poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling which we studied in class.
1. Do you agree with Kipling's message in this poem? Why or why not? Identify which of Kipling's statements is the most meaningful to you and explain why. Is Kipling's advice useful for people today? Why or why not?
2. Kipling uses the terms man and son at the end of the poem. Why did Kipling choose to use these words? Does the term "man" apply to all humans or is Kipling implying that courage and leadership are masculine traits? Were the terms used to make the message personal or should we consider that Kipling's message accurately defines the requirements of any courageous person or leader?
3. Identify and explain Kipling's use of the sound devices; rhythm, rhyme and repetition.
